WARNING: "X" is the first of a new generation of robots which contain an innovative new feature - the ability to think, feel, and make their own decisions. However, this ability could be very dangerous. If "X" were to break the first rule of robotics, "a robot must never harm a human being", the results would be disastrous and I fear that no force on Earth could stop him.
Approximately 30 years will be required before we can safely confirm his reliability. Unfortunately, I will not live to see that day, nor do I have anyone to carry on my work. Therefore, I have decided to seal him in this capsule, which will test his internal systems until his reliability has been confirmed. Please do not disturb the capsule until that time. I can only hope for the best. September 18, 20XX T.
Thomas Light, Mega Man X intro. Tropes A-M. The former's gameplay jumps from 2D to 3D seamlessly without warning. The latter is a better example, with most of the gameplay being 2D with some occasional 3D moments. Aborted Arc : the Maverick Hunter X version of the timeline after poor sales killed off the chance for continuing the story.
Is a Crapshoot : Being cheap replicas of X, Reploids in their earlier generations at least have the tendency for going "Maverick". It introduced the concept of the "suffering circuit", a specially-designed chip meant to give X empathy that Dr.
Cain failed to successfully replicate allegedly making them go Maverick. This is also the case with the Rockman Zero Collection timeline, a portion of the official website which had a slightly different account of the Maverick Virus claiming that Dr. Light foresaw such a thing and made X "impervious" to viruses. Doppler's Mavericks. Autobots, Rock Out! Art Evolution : The appearances of the main characters were slightly altered in X8 X's helmet, Zero's ponytail, Alia's upgrade of her chest, and the shape of the characters eyes.
Word of God claims that it was to make them look more human. Every game made since has used an Animesque artstyle more similar to X4-X7, with Legacy Collection's art bringing the X8 characters and Alia's redesign into the artstyle the old art is still used in-game.
Before that, the first game art was like classic Mega Man trying to be serious ; by the time X4 and X5 came out the art evolved to be much less cartoony. Though this is at least partially due to changing artists between games; X1 art was done by Inafune, and it shows. The Artifact : The boss rematches in the fortress stages of each game.
In the Classic series a Boss Rush was an intimidating idea, because it was a rematch with the eight bosses and it was going to be the same fight as before, more or less. But the X series includes numerous upgrades for X's HP and armor, so by the time you refight the bosses, X is probably fully upgraded with much higher health, firepower, and maneuverability than when he beat them the first time, making the fights much easier.
Several of these missiles touchdown and explode, leaving massive, smoking craters. Obviously, the shock waves from the explosions should've leveled the city outright. Flame Mammoth uses the ground pound move, also used by Guts Man and Hard Man, to violently shake the ground when he lands from a jump. Problem is, Flame Mammoth's weight is lb; most cars and trucks available today are heavier than he is, and they just don't release that much energy when they fall from similar heights.
Awesome, but Impractical : A lot of X's helmet upgrades fall under this. The SNES ones, and their Gameboy Expies , aren't much use once you memorize where they'd be useful aside from unlocking that game's respective Game-Breaker.
Half of the regular X5 and X6 ones reduce weapon energy usage which Zero nor the Ultimate Armor really need , the Shadow Armor speeds up sword attacks, and the Gaea Armor has no stated function at all. Aversions are X4 game play is set up so weapons are still useful , X7 attracts power ups from further away , and X8 a weaponized form of X1's part, a quick charge, and unlimited weapon energy.
Charging up the X-Buster for normal mooks is only useful if you had one ready. Since they lack Mercy Invincibility , it's much faster to rapid fire them to death. Bosses are a different story.
For that matter as well, charged up special weapons are situational at best, and not very useful for bosses most of the time. Even Duff McWhalen is awesome in its own silly way. A lot of maverick names fall under this. Most of them have the formula of their element or gimmick followed by the name of whatever their design is based on.
Sometimes this works too well, or they get a little more creative with the formula. Bad Boss : It is heavily implied that Flame Mammoth spends most of his time in his unit mocking those inferior to him in terms of strength. As an added bit of laser-guided karma, he's also the only one of the former Maverick Hunters in the first X game that defected to Sigma's side to not have any of his unit go with him, although given the setting where he is fought, he probably didn't need them anyways.
Bag of Spilling : The games tend to eschew all weapons and upgrades you've collected in the previous games, except for a select few. X, for example, keeps his dash upgrade after acquiring it in first game. Likewise, Zero started to Double Jump on his own starting from X6. Hell, Hunter Rank has a propensity to inexplicably drop between sequels whenever it's a relevant gameplay mechanic. Zero can be a Special A-class hunter in one game, before dropping down to D-class in another.
For a playable version, in X7 and X8 , you can use 2 characters in a level, essentially creating your own Bash Brothers. Subverted when Monstrosity Equals Weakness comes into play, seeing as he's the easiest Boss in the game. X8 featured Bamboo Pandemonium, the single largest boss in the game.
Ironically, pandas aren't normally the first thing people think of when they think of ferocious ursine creatures. That said, his face is still very cute. And he can kill you with one hit of his Desperation Attack.
The virus is supposed to make other robots violent by removing their inhibitions and their empathy. Big Damn Heroes : A subversion at the beginning of X5 : You as the player are the one coming to the rescue of the one in distress who was even in disrepair , when Sigma personally attacks them.
X8 's Hard Mode: Whoever is the backup character will be captured by Vile after that Mini-Boss fight , and the main player character will have to traverse the rest of the final level alone. In an awesome Gameplay and Story Segregation aversion, Sigma traps the main player halfway during the Boss fight, and, true to the trope, the backup character will return to save his partner.
In X6 , some stages also qualify where you have to use misleading lights as a guide , if the right requirements are met, and X8 's "Pitch Black" stage. Blade on a Stick : Available as a weapon for Zero in X8. Which is a shame, because beneath the awful, awful localization, there is actually a reasonably serviceable story.
Just how bad is the translation? See if you can try to make sense out of the below exchange: Zero: "Shield Sheldon Too bad about your previous life. I'm sorry about what happened to you. I was new as a bodyguard. That's all. I was a rookie, unused to my job as a bodyguard. It couldn't be helped. Our officers are not good enough They could cost us everything.
We failed, and it cost you everything. I was useless as a bodyguard And was useless to everyone else. When I accepted that fact, I accepted my fate.
However, there turned out to be someone who needs me. He has given me one more chance. And therefore, I am going to fulfill my mission as a bodyguard now.
I'll protect him, even if it means that I have to sacrifice my life. Come on, Zero! I wasn't any good as a bodyguard, couldn't even protect the people I was supposed to. Once I knew that I was useless, I knew there was no point in resisting any further. But now, there's someone that needs me, someone that I can protect. I'm going to do my best to succeed where I failed before, even if it means I might die again.
X : "Hey you! Quit fooling around! You've caused enough chaos! The fake me appeared. I don't know what's happening. It's that fake version of me. He appeared from nowhere, and I just don't understand what's happening now Shut up! X defeats it, but the final blow is landed by the mysterious Zero Nightmare before it disappears. Not far behind is High Max , who claims to be investigating the Nightmare Phenomenon in the area and attacks X for interfering.
X is unable to damage him, and High Max scoffs before leaving. Shortly afterwards, X and the Maverick Hunters hear an announcement from the scientist Isoc that a worldwide investigation of the Nightmare has begun. He blames the "ghost of Zero" for the events, infuriating X. The Maverick Hunters are suspicious of the Nightmare and the Nightmare Investigators , so X is deployed to do his own research.
He finds that the Nightmare Investigators are hostile and share data with previously deceased Reploids, and he also encounters the Zero Nightmare again. If X can destroy the Zero Nightmare, he is overjoyed to see Zero suddenly return, having been repairing himself in hiding until this point. With X and Zero teamed up again, they continue the investigation. X complies, finally destroying High Max along the way before facing Gate.
After defeating Gate, he reveals that he also resurrected Sigma as a backup plan, who appears and kills Gate before challenging X. X pursues Sigma deeper into the laboratory. He fights and defeats him, stating that he will fight Sigma as many times as it takes to keep him down. After the battle, X saves the remains of Gate for Alia to hopefully repair, because he knew what it was like to lose a colleague and didn't want to see any more innocent Reploids die.
Alia thanks him for this, and they swear to try to rebuild the Earth. Alternatively, if X didn't ever find Zero throughout the game, Zero observes X and Alia without revealing himself. He then comments on the events on the game, before heading after the yet undefeated Zero Nightmare. Months later, the Maverick Hunters were severely crippled as X retired from active duty to pursue more peaceful means to end the constant fighting. In his absence, a new Maverick-hunting faction known as Red Alert formed around the skilled vigilante Red , though their standards were much lower and more dangerous than those of the Hunters.
After Axl fled from Red Alert and was arrested by Zero, X met him at Hunter Base and reprimanded him for letting his workplace politics cause so much public damage. Red then contacted the Hunters and challenged them to a duel over custody of Axl, something which X initially refused to take part in.
Once Zero and Axl had rescued 64 Reploids or defeated the eight Red Alert Mavericks , X decided that the fighting was too intense to ignore and finally came out of retirement to help after all. He joined them in the attack on Red Alert's fortress, the Crimson Palace , helping them defeat Red and discovering that Sigma was indeed behind the conflict.
Sigma boasted that he would one day steal the bodies of X and Zero before challenging them. Once Sigma was reduced to a damaged form, he punched Axl through a wall, and Red suddenly reappeared and began fighting X and Zero. Sigma then attempted to absorb Red and take his power, but it turned out to be Axl in disguise, who then shot him out of a window. X was bothered by Axl's reckless move, but glad he was safe and had defeated Sigma.
In the ending, X is seen doubting Axl's self-control and hesitating to permit him to be an official Hunter. Axl says that he's only caused as much damage as X did in previous adventures, but X claims that he was wrong to do so in the first place. Axl then heads out to fight a Maverick attack, determined to prove himself. Elsewhere, Zero has a disturbing nightmare of X or a similar individual on a murderous Maverick-killing rampage.
Some time after the Red Alert incident, construction began on the Jakob Project. One of the personnel transport cars exploded off the spiral track of the elevator and crashed near the elevator site, and X was the first to arrive on the scene. After requesting a rescue squad, X was shocked to see an army of Sigmas emerging from the burning debris. The leader of these Reploids, Lumine , appeared to explain that the Reploids had taken on Sigma's durable from in order to survive the impact, being New Generation Reploids capable of changing shape via Copy Chips.
Lumine further explained that this power over their bodies allowed them to nullify viral infections as well. X was left befuddled and disturbed by the incident. They were forced to destroy it, but were then met with a newly-upgraded Vile. Vile explained that he and other Mavericks were taking over the Jakob Project, revealing that he had kidnapped Lumine in the process.
X and the others returned to Hunter Base, where they heard that New Generation Reploids involved in the Jakob Project were beginning to riot all over the globe. X lamented the start of a new conflict, but Axl's enthusiasm helped him to quickly accept the situation. The trio of Hunters then headed out to stop the Maverick uprising; in doing so, X learned that many of the New Generation Reploids saw him as an outdated model with little to offer in their ideal new world. After defeating four Mavericks, Alia's research revealed that Sigma's data was unique to the New Generation Reploids and pointed towards his involvement in the riots.
X was disappointed, but not surprised by this development. Later, he had to explain to Layer when she asked about the history between Zero and Sigma. Once all eight Mavericks were destroyed, Sigma personally contacted Hunter Base and challenged X to come face him in space. X and the Hunters boarded Jakob and entered space, fighting Vile on the way. In the Gateway, X fought what appeared to be Sigma himself, but turned out to just be a New Generation Reploid copying his form.
However, Sigma's presence was pinpointed to be on the Moon itself within a newly-constructed Sigma Palace. Upon entering the Moon, X fought and defeated Vile for the last time in Hard Mode, Vile attacks one of the Hunters to separate the duo. He then confronted Sigma, who thanked him for starting him down the path of the Maverick in the first place. In the ensuing battle, X and the Hunters defeated Sigma, reducing him to a pile of scrap. Lumine then revealed himself, but suddenly turned sinister as he explained that he had been merely using Sigma to hasten the evolution of New Generation Reploids.
They fought Lumine and defeated both of his forms, leaving his body immobile. However, as Axl approached Lumine's body, a tentacle lashed out and struck him in the head, forcing X to quickly destroy it with a Charge Shot.
X carried Axl's comatose body as the trio rode the Jakob elevator back to the Earth. He pondered Lumine's statement - that they were merely fighting an inevitable future that would always seem Maverick to them - and lamented the hopelessness of the never-ending conflict. Was every Reploid really destined to go Maverick someday? Zero sensed his confusion and reassured that they would continue to fight on, no matter what their destinies might hold.
Several years later after the events of the Mega Man X series, X finally ended the Maverick Wars with the help of the "Sigma Antibody Program", also known as the Mother Elf , which had been reverse-engineered from Zero's internal workings and immunity to the Sigma Virus. This led to a period of great peace, even though X was no longer working with his partner Zero at his side. Some time after this, a human scientist named Dr. Weil proposed Project Elpizo , a plan to create a perfect ruler to control all Reploids without risking them going Maverick.
X disagreed with the nature of the project, believing that Reploids and humans are fully capable of co-existing with each other peacefully without external control. In retaliation, Dr. Weil secretly altered the Mother Elf, turning her into the Dark Elf and starting the " Elf Wars " so he could use Zero's original body to create Omega.
Because of this, Zero's "mind and soul" had to be placed into a new body created by Dr. Ciel 's ancestor, which allowed Zero to fight alongside X to defeat Omega. For the damages Omega and Weil had caused, Weil was modified into a cyborg and banished into the wasteland while Omega was sentenced to perpetual exile in Earth's orbit. After this war, Zero sealed himself away once again, trusting that the world was in X's good hands, while X assumed leadership of the utopian city Neo Arcadia.
X attempted to stop Zero's encapsulation, but by the time X arrived to halt the procedure, it was already halfway finished, although not before Zero offered words of encouragement to X. It was presumably around this time that X retrieved Zero's Z-Saber again, which he would keep for years. During his rule of Neo Arcadia, X oversaw the welfare of both humans and Reploids for a long, undisclosed period of time.
Maverick attacks continued to occur due to the lingering influence of the Dark Elf, and X grew weary of his long life of countless battles with no end in sight. He began fearing that he would someday lose himself and become worse than the Mavericks he faced hearkening back to his fears in Mega Man X4.
After all attempts to seal away the Dark Elf failed, X decided to use his own body as a seal, planning to lock the Dark Elf within Yggdrasil forever. The burden of becoming the seal caused his mind to be removed from his body. To get around this, X's mind and DNA were copied and split into four parts in order to create the Four Guardians : four powerful Reploids who would protect X's body along with the rest of Neo Arcadia.
Additionally, X's soul persisted in the form of a Cyber-Elf , watching over Neo Arcadia while totally unbeknownst to the world. Due to X's disappearance at this time, a young genius named Ciel created an exact copy of X to fulfill the role of the leader of Neo Arcadia.
While Copy X at first fulfilled his duties as a leader rather well, the replica eventually started using extreme measures against Reploids to ensure peace and prosperity for the humans.
This horrified Cyber-Elf X, but he was unable to do anything about it in his current form. Copy X's rule was the exact opposite of what X himself would have done, as it went against his dream of Reploids and humans co-existing peacefully together.
To help them have a fighting chance, X sent Ciel the necessary information that would help her find the only one who he knew would step in to help save them: Zero. Without a physical body, X could only fight by supporting his comrade Zero, such as giving him his old Z-Saber back.
After a series of battles, Zero arrived at the top of Yggdrasil, where X's body rests. Zero arrived before Elpizo could finish breaking the seal, but Elpizo trapped Zero in an energy field.
He then forced Zero to watch as he stabbed X's body with his beam rapier, destroying X's body and finally awakening the Dark Elf, obtaining her power.
While his body was destroyed, X continued to exist as a Cyber-Elf. Cyber-Elf X persisted until the end of Mega Man Zero 3 , where he used up the last of his power helping Zero and finally dissipated, entrusting the world to his friend's hands as he had done with X years ago. X reappears in the form of Biometal Model X , a powerful artifact which contains the " soul " of X. X's specifications. Height: cm 5 ft. X matures as time passes, like all reploids. Being a robot, X possesses strength, speed, endurance and other abilities well above the normal human capacity, although his physical limits are never revealed in the games.
He also has upgrades in which completed set are armors. The true scope of X's abilities are constantly under speculation by many of the characters in the series. X seems to constantly change and evolve. In many instances he seems to draw on some unknown power within himself. Both Dr. Cain who examined X as well as Sigma who is obsessed with X and Zero's capabilities don't understand a large portion of how both Hunters' internal systems work.
What is known is that these hidden abilities make X immune to the Maverick Virus and let him match any opponent. It is also likely that the armor that Dr. Light left him may be tools that allow X to slightly tap into his "limitless potential". It can then be assumed that X's true power is capable of release only on his standard frame. Mega Man X incorporates some abilities that in the classic series had to be acquired as separate parts. Epsilon fought for Reploid rights, but the Federation Government decided he was too dangerous.
X spends the rest of the game teaming up with the Resistance inside Giga City and defeating the Rebellion Army Mavericks. He gains many new allies and also reunites with Zero and also Axl, who arrived in the city looking for some info on his copy powers as Axl's Copy ability supposedly was developed there after many intense battles, one which cost X's ally Spider his life, X engages Epsilon in battle.
Angered, X and his crew chase after Redips and engage him in battle where he reveals that he was Spider all along. However, thanks to Ferham , they manage to defeat him. After the battle Epsilon is cleared of his Maverick status and Colonel Redips is stated as the true Maverick mastermind in all official records. In Command Mission , X's armor received a major design overhaul.
Although similar, it introduced gold and white accents and a black body instead of the usual cyan. His armor was more streamlined and featured large red jewels on the arms and legs. Whenever running or in battle, his back generated red energy that flared out to resemble a fiery scarf. This change in appearance was supposedly to allow use of Force Metals, according to a line of dialogue. X appears in Ultimate Marvel vs.
X would later appear as himself in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite as a playable character. His X Buster is a separate command and locks him in place when charging, though he is not entirely immobile as he can immediately follow up the attack with either a dash or an overhead smash.
He can fire any of these weapons twice in a row or fire one and cancel into another weapon to enhance his projectile game. His Hypers include a Charge Shot that comes out instantly. His Lv. His alternate costumes are his armor from Command Mission and a new outfit called X Special , which is based on the TruForce redesign of X by Keisuke Mizuno that was initially used as an April Fool's joke.
X appears in the Capcom, Sega and Namco Bandai crossover game as a playable character alongside Zero. Tron Bonne mistakes him for MegaMan Volnutt at first. X uses Nova Strike alongside Zero's Rakuhouha while donning the Ultimate Armor for his unit's finisher attack, and uses Hadouken alongside Zero's Genmurei for his multiple assault attack, which is learned by the pair at some point during Chapter X also uses the final level charge shots from X3 and X4 , respectively.
All of X's charge moves and special abilities i. X returns for the sequel, along with Zero. Again the party meets them in Cyberspace, and the Maverick Hunters apparently know Captain Commando and his unit's efforts in maintaining peace across the galaxy. X appears in Super Smash Bros. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate he appears as a spirit. In an unfamiliar world, his only certainty is his mission to protect humans and maintain peace. A battle against Wesker shortly after the latter had murdered Oswell E.
Spencer got him disillusioned about his mission, and he was convinced to seek the Land of Illusion to figure out if what he is doing is right. In TEPPEN , X's design is decidedly more robotic, with his limbs and hands having multiple panels and joints, along with panel lines on his face. Doc Wily tries to destroy Mega Man by sending hordes of hasty robots after him. Mega Man destroys the robots and then battles Doc Wily. Does Mega Man X feature more of the same?
What's different in this one- player game is, for starters, Mega Man's setting. MM X is set far in the future, and Doc Wily is tucked away in the history books. Humankind's current nemeses are now the RoboPolice half-human, half-robotic cops. When the RoboPolice go bad, there's only one robot with the nuts and bolts necessary to short-circuit them.
You guessed it, it's Mega Man to the rescue. Although Mega Man X's. Mega Man still runs, jumps, and fires like he did in his previous adventures. You'll notice right off, though, that he's a much larger sprite, and he's got a new, more sophisticated, bluish look. The background graphics are also different. Notice that Mega Man now fights his way through a futuristic cityscape, with a heightened degree of detail in the background graphics and larger enemy sprites.
Rush MM's mechanical canine friend of earlier times and Mega Man's other mechanical allies have long since gone to that junk heap in the sky. These two RoboPolice escaped the reprogramming that turned the other mechanical cops bad. With their help, and additional hardware enhancements that give the Man super speed, super weapons, and a special new head-on attack, Mega Man's able to tackle an entirely new crew of enemies.
The gameplay is similar to the one in the first Mega Man game, but includes new features. X, the main character, has the ability to clash along the ground, can climb walls and has a Wall Jump option, and he can also dash and jump at the same time, increasing his speed in the air. X has more mobility in the second game than in the original release.
The players had to rely a lot on the weapons in the first game, but the new mobility allows them to play the game with the default gun only. Zero, who is the leader of the Maverick Hunters in the first Mega Man X game, is also a playable character. He is armed with a beam saber and relies on this weapon a lot.
He gains the ability to duck in the latter releases, but also new other interesting capabilities. The Mavericks do not have humanoid appearance, but are mostly types of organisms most of the time animals , like most of the bosses in the classic series.
Their names and attacks, however, are based on mechanical or chemical phenomena or laws of physics. Though some Mavericks have new, never-before-seen powers e. X is a new type of robot with the ability to think on its own and make its own decisions. When he realized that X might turn against the human race, he sealed X in a capsule for 30 years, in which it is not known what happened, but it seems Dr. Thomas Light died. Almost years after its creation, X is found by Dr.
Cain, and creates a legion of robots, which was later on infected by a virus. The game was fairly popular due to the interesting plot. GameSpot users rated the release with 9.
