The tub should be smooth so the worms can't crawl out. We recommend leaving the tub open, but if you must keep a lid on your superworm container maybe due to interference by pets or small children then make sure it's well-ventilated. Check the inside of your container regularly for condensation. Excess moisture can lead to mold and bacterial growth, which are bad for the worms. Here at the Ovipost farm, we use bran as bedding. You can also use wheat middlings, ground up oats, or crushed cheerios.
Do not use flavored or instant oatmeal. Superworm poop is called frass. It comes in the form of small, dry, odorless granules, and looks similar to bread yeast. When you notice an abundance of frass in the container, add more bedding so the superworms have enough to eat.
Tip for gardeners: Superworm frass makes an excellent fertilizer. This rather thick chitin can make it harder for your pet to eat, so be sure when buying them your pet can handle chomping through it. Analysis of a Superworm Moisture Superworms also have the ability to bite, unlike mealworms, and have a small pin on their backs they can use for attacking, similar to a scorpion, so use caution when feeding to a younger animal!
For best results, superworms should be provided with a bedding of high quality powdered grain mixture. As the superworms consume the food, they leave behind droppings called frass and shed skins. Eventually, the frass and shed skin can largely replace the powdered grain. Be sure to check the composition of the bedding frequently the frass is finer than the grain and add more food as needed.
Superworms depend on fruit and vegetables for their hydration. The most common items provided are carrots and potato. Another reason to provide fresh vegetables to your superworms is for hydration. Aside from vitamins, vegetables are full of water, and provide a way for your superworms to get water without potentially drowning in a water dish or making the bedding soggy.
Use nutritious vegetables like carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, and squash, and remove them when they've dried out or start to mold. Alerts can go here.
