It would certainly void your warranty or AppleCare if you still have coverage, might cause the machine to heat up beyond its ability to cool itself, and would very likely make it less reliable.

Jun 8, AM in response to meddling In response to meddling Nope The thermal tolerances on notebooks especially ones packed as densely as MacBooks are very tight. They tend to run on the hot side under normal loads. An improperly configured overclocking can damage the CPU or graphics card.
Another disadvantage is instability. Overclocked systems tend to crash and BSOD than a system working in stock clock speed. But, of course, there are dangers that come along with something as magical as overclocking. Increased heat, permanent damage to the component, voiding warranties, etc. If you are looking to upgrade your base model Mac Pro into a top of the line model and don't mind the inherent risk, perhaps you should give it a try.
