The riot was caused by horrendous conditions at the prison, three prisoners to a cell made for one, and prisoners locked up for 23 hours a day with nothing to do. The prisoners felt no one was listening to them and they had to do something.
The riot led to the writing of the Woolf report, that concluded that the conditions in the prison were intolerable and led to major recommendations for the future of the prison system.
The prolific killer Harold Shipman was held there on remand whilst awaiting trial. Shipman was British doctor and serial killer who unbelievably murdered at least of his patients. In he was convicted on 15 counts of murder and one count of forgery and sentenced to life in prison.
Brady committed the notorious moors murders alongside Myra Hindley between July and October The pair murdered at least five children; four of the children were known to be sexually assaulted.
Brady was born in Scotland, Glasgow in and met Myra Hindley when they were working together in a small factory in Manchester. Brady was sentenced for a minimum of 30 years; he died of natural causes aged 79 and was buried at sea to prevent his grave becoming a shrine or tourist attraction. His trial began at Preston Crown Court in and it took 4 months to find him guilty of 15 charges of murder and one of forgery. Sentenced to 15 life sentences and a four-year sentence for forgery he was sent to Durham Prison and later transferred to Wakefield Prison in A year later he committed suicide in his cell, found on the eve of his 58 th birthday.
His experiences in the prison are well documented, not just in his interviews with the press, but also his songs. Luckily his protection was not needed, with fellow prisoners quickly adopting Brown as one of their own, mainly due to his treatment from prison officers. After 2 months he was released on parole and insists that the experience left him in the best shape of his life, and with an even stronger dislike for people in positions of authority.

In March a man accused of killing his girlfriend after she dumped him was found dead at the jail. A series of riots plagued the prison between April 1 and April 25 and around staff and 47 prisoners were injured. Concerns about the conditions within the prison and the fact prisoners felt their complaints were not being heard is believed to have sparked the riot - which began at the prison chapel.
